Psoriasis Definition

People say beauty is only skin deep, and that inner beauty is more important than what is seen outside. But we can’t deny the fact that in the modern world we live in, the way we look pretty  has an impact on what people would think of us. It is because of this way of thinking that people with various skin diseases like psoriasis have problems blending in with society.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a disease that affects the skin. Its most common manifestation is red scaly patches that show on the skin. Psoriatic plaques, or the red scaly patches, are caused by a rapid increase in cell turnover. Psoriasis usually Psoriasis Definition, chronic plaque psoriasisappears on the skin of the elbows and knees but can also grow anywhere in the body, even the scalp, fingernails and mouth.

Even though psoriasis is non-contagious, it is a chronic recurring condition that may be as minor as localized patches to complete body coverage. Psoriasis is a common skin disorder in the United States. In fact, over 5.5 million American adults have psoriasis.

Psoriasis is said to be an auto-immune disease. The body’s T-cells that are responsible for attacking viruses and bacteria mistakenly turns on the skin cells. Because of the body’s immune system response, the skin area that was attacked by the T-cells swell and there is rapid production of new skin cells.

What are the different risk factors for psoriasis?
There are a lot of different factors that increase a person’s risk of developing psoriasis, these risk factors include:

Genetics. Psoriasis tends to run in families. In fact, most psoriasis patients have at least one other member in their family that have the same skin condition.

Infections. Any form of skin infection can aggravate psoriasis. Such conditions as thrush and boils have been associated to people developing psoriasis.

Stress. Emotional states can reflect as altered immune system responses.

Reaction to certain medications. Some people experience flare-ups after taking certain medications. Anti-malarial drugs, beta-blockers, and corticosteroids are only some of the medicines that can trigger psoriasis.

What treatments can be used for psoriasis?
On the first outbreak of psoriatic plaques, consult a dermatologist to find the best treatment for psoriasis. Here are three of the most commonly used psoriatic treatment:

Topical medications. These are gels, creams, or lotions that are applied to the affected area. Topical treatments are prescribed for mild to moderate psoriasis.

Phototherapy. This treatment uses light, usually ultraviolet, flashed onto the affected area of the body. This is commonly administered in moderate to severe cases of psoriasis.

Systemic treatment. These are medications that can be taken by injection or infusion to treat the immune system dysfunction that triggered the psoriasis. It is used for moderate to severe, or disabling cases of psoriasis.

If treatment is administered at the early onset of the skin disorder, you prevent the disease from spreading further into the body. Proper skin care is important as your skin serves as your first line of defense from different bacterias and viruses so do not neglect it. At the first sign of any unusual rash, consult your physician. Taking care of your skin is one way of protecting yourself from diseases.

Psoriasis Tanning

Tanning And Psoriasis

There are a lot of natural treatments for psoriasis, some people with psoriasis enjoy sun tanning just as much as people without psoriasis, and psoriasis tanning, psoriasis lampusually even more. Not only the sun gives your skin a nice golden color but if you have psoriasis – the sun also helps you to temporarily get rid of your psoriatic plaques.

There are a lot of

Some of us are lucky enough to live in the areas with a constant summer (Southern California, Southern Florida etc.). But the majority enjoys the sun only in the summer months. Some people with psoriasis not only take frequent vacations to the places with a warm climate, but even try to relocate there in order to keep their psoriasis in check.

Unfortunately, this does not pertain to the people with the summer type of psoriasis. The sun actually aggravates the state of their skin and psoriasis.

But what exactly is a suntan? Suntan is the reaction of the skin to the sun. Our skin tries to protect itself from the excessive sun rays by starting to produce more of the melanin pigment. The pigment melanin gives the skin its nuance – pink, brown etc. People with darker skin are better protected from the sun. They usually develop a nice even suntan. People with a fair skin, instead of an even suntan may develop sunburns and uneven pigmentation. This is due to that their skin does not produce enough of melanin to protect itself.

After stopping the exposure to the UV rays, the skin stops producing excessive melanin and returns to its usual color.

Excessive sun causes damages, starting with painful blisters and premature skin aging, and including melanoma – skin cancer.

It is a fact that people with the winter type of psoriasis can temporary get rid of their plaques with a regular timed exposure to the sun rays. But why does this happen? The thing is that the sun rays exterminate the excessive T-cells in the skin. And the T-cells of people with psoriasis are one of the culprits of psoriatic plaques. Furthermore, the remaining T-cells lose their ability to express the IFN-gamma cytokines, which play a big role in the inflammatory processes.

Does it make sense to suntan in order to get rid of psoriasis? I believe that it does. The benefits in this case outweigh the negative side-effects.

Most celebrities and other public people maintain their skin with a bronze hue year round. Why do they do it? Because tanned skin usually looks more smooth and healthy and shows less imperfections than pale skin. Don’t they know about the adverse side effects of constantly subjecting their skin to the UV rays? I believe that they do. But their looks are much more important for them as it directly contributes to their public image, fame and therefore profits.

People with psoriasis suffer from the unpleasant external manifestations of psoriasis. Will getting rid of these manifestations outweigh the side-effects such as premature skin aging? I believe so.

Simply try to be careful with sun tanning. Start to tan with short periods. Keep a record of how long you suntan in order not to burn. Moisturize your skin after each sun tanning. You may also want to see your dermatologist in order to start regularly monitoring the state of your skin while you are sun tanning.

With our help we can transform your life and turn it into something amazing. Once you begin to eat healthy and live healthy you will have a whole new outlook on life and feel better than ever.

Psoriasis is a medical disorder that affects the joints and the skin. It is not contagious and will usually cause red scaly patches on the surface of the skin that is affected by it. The scaly patches are referred to by doctors as psoriatic plaques. The affected areas of skin will accumulate around connecting areas and create a silvery to white appearance. Affected areas are usually on the knees and elbows – but it can also affect the genitals and scalp.

This is a recurring disorder that can vary in how severe it is. When it is minor it will have localized patches or it can cover most of the body. It can also cause the joints to inflame – which is referred to as psoriatic arthritis. Close to 15% of people with arthritis suffer from psoriatic arthritis.

Doctors have not been able to determine the cause of psoriasis. After much research they believe that it is possibly caused by certain genetic components. There are many thing that can irritate the condition. These factors include; smoking, stress, and an abundance of alcohol.

There are several types of treatments available to those who are affected by this medical condition. But because it is a recurring condition it can sometimes be hard to treat the symptoms of it.

Plaque Psoriasis is the most common form. It can affect around 80 to 90% of people and will appear as raised areas of inflamed skin. This skin is covered with white scaly skin.

Flexural Psoriasis will appear on the skin as inflamed patches. It can affect a person in skin folds that can usually be found around the genitals, armpits, underneath breasts, and underneath a stomach of someone that is overweight. Sweat and friction can irritate the affected areas and they will be very vulnerable to different fungal infections.

Guttate Psoriasis will appear as several small round spots. These spots will appear over large areas on the body and is usually found on the limbs, scalp, and trunk. It can be associated with streptococcal throat infection.

Pustular Psoriasis will appear on the skin as raised bumps filled with pus that is not infectious or contagious. The skin that is underneath and surrounds the pus filled bumps is tender and red. It is more commonly found on the feet and hands and can appear in wide patches.

Nail Psoriasis will produce several different changes in the both the toe and finger nails. The changes will be the pitting of the nails, lines running across the nails, discoloring of the nails, the loosening of the nails, and the thickening of the skin underneath the nails.

Psoriatic Arthritis will cause inflammation of the joints and the tissue connecting it. It will cause the joints to swell and will usually affect the spine, knees, hips, toes, and fingers.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis is the exfoliation and inflammation of the skin that covers a wide amount of the skin. It will usually cause an unstable amount of plaque psoriasis that will follow a withdrawal of systemic treatment. This type of psoriasis can be fatal because the extreme exfoliation and inflammation can disrupt the ability for the body to control its temperature.
